Julian Escobar

Julian Escobar is a Colombian jazz drummer and composer. He was born in a musical family. At four years old he became interested in drums, as a result of seeing his father playing the guitar on a rock band. He started to take drum lessons at five as soon as he received his first drum kit. He studied drums throughout his childhood and adolescence, especially with various jazz drummers in his native city, Bogotá. He was very curious about the improvisation,  and that was one of the reasons why he wanted to studied jazz. The first jazz drummers he listen were what today would be label as modern drummers, such as Jack Dejonethe, Dave Weckl, Mark Guilliana, Steve Gadd, to mention some.

As he learned more about drums, the history of thes instrument, and the music play with it, he became intrested in also in drummers such as Philly Joe jones, kenny clarke, Max Roach, Elvin Jones, Roy haynes, and Tony Williams. He performed as a very young drummer in different jazz venues at Bogota, with his first trio. He earned a scholarship at Berklee College of Music, but attended to the Royal Conservatoire in the Hague, in the Netherlands, where he currently is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in jazz drums. At the conservatory he has received lessons from Eric Ineke, Felix Schlarmann, and Stefan Kruger. He also received a lesson from an the invited teacher, Greg Hutchinson, and assisted to his Master Class at the conservatory. He has also assisted to masterclasses from Chris Cheek, Pedro Martins, and Simon Moulier, beign able to participate playing on their ensemble lessons. He assisted to a Master class of Kyle Poole, and to a rehearsal of Emmet Cohen trio.
